New tyre labels - what do you need to know?

On 1 May, changes are coming to tyre labelling, which will make it easier for consumers to find information about selected tyre properties more quickly. The new label will include the current and additional product parameters. In addition to the addition of information about 3PMSF, ice grip, rolling noise class, and a product information sheet, tyre dealers should pay attention to the new labelling requirement for truck tyres (C3). In the remainder of this article, we will discuss the most significant changes that have been introduced in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2020/740 of the European Parliament and of the Council on the labelling of tyres with respect to fuel efficiency and other parameters of 25 May 2020.

New label

The new label has been extended to include additional information that the tyre purchaser should be made aware of before purchasing. Thanks to the use of a QR code (located in the upper right corner of the new label), the purchaser will be able to access the necessary information with a device equipped to read these codes. Beneath the code, there will also be information on the specific product:

  • brand,
  • size,
  • tyre type identifier,
  • tyre type.

The new label design will include information such as:

  • Name of tyre manufacturer / tyre brand
  • QR code
  • tyre type identifier
  • Tyre size
  • Tyre class
  • Fuel efficiency of a tyre
  • Grip on wet road surfaces
  • External rolling noise.
  • 3PMSF
  • Ice grip pictogram

The new labels, which will be introduced on 1 May, will apply to tyres manufactured after 1 May 2021. This means that all products manufactured by 30 April will continue to carry the label currently in force (until 1 May 2021).

The most important changes

  • Simplified classification of rolling resistance and wet braking performance.
  • Complete the noise level information by adding a letter classification: A, B, C. These will replace the graphical representation of the noise level.
  • Addition of a pictogram indicating whether it is a snow grip tyre - 3PMSF
  • Addition of a pictogram indicating whether it is a studless tyre with grip on ice in accordance with the new ISO standard.
  • Labelling of Class C3 truck tyres.
  • Reclassification of tyres with regard to rolling resistance and wet grip. Tyres of the current class E will be assigned to the (currently) empty class D, while tyres marked with the letters F and G will be assigned to class E.
  • Entry of a QR code linking to the EPREL database, which contains a product information sheet entered directly by the tyre manufacturer.

3PMSF – What does it mean?

The symbol consisting of a graphic representation of a mountain with 3 peaks and a snowflake is an indication of the tyre's grip on a snowy road. The symbol indicates that the tyre bearing the graphic is made of a suitable rubber compound and has a tread suitable for winter conditions.
